Shipping Clerk

SUMMARY

Performs routine shipping and keeps records on outgoing shipments. Distributes merchandise, materials and products.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Reviews orders for shipping and checks for accuracy and completeness
  • Pulls, packs and wraps orders for shipment; secures merchandise, materials or products for shipping; examines outgoing shipments to ensure shipments meet specifications
  • Place materials in envelopes, boxes, cartons or other containers for distribution. Secures and protects contents as needed
  • Stamps, types, writes or affixes addresses and shipping instructions on packaged materials
  • Routes items to appropriate staging area for shipment
  • Forwards packages by mail, shipping company, messenger, message center, or other appropriate means; arranges appropriate forms and types of transportation utilizing knowledge of shipping procedures, routes and rates
  • Keeps accurate records of all shipments for accounting, billing, inventory and delivery purposes; prepares packing slips and other shipping forms
  • Answers questions about location or content of various materials; responds to inquiries from employees, customers and others and refers, when necessary, to appropriate persons
  • Assembles containers or selects preassembled containers
  • Rewinds material on Rewinder machine
  • Measures and uses Tema cutter to slit material to customer request

OTHER DUTIES

  • Rewinds 50-yard rolls into 10-yard rolls
  • Rewinds 250-yard rolls into 50-yard rolls
  • Files and retrieves letters, correspondence, memoranda, reports, and other documents
  • Prepares and maintains inventory records for department
  • Operates lift truck or hand truck to convey or hoist shipment to platform, shipping or staging area
  • Serves as a member of employee committees, as assigned
  • Operates listed office machines as required
  • Prepares and monitors work orders
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Helpful to have some knowledge of shipping and distribution principles and practices; a plus to have some knowledge of postal and shipping guidelines and requirements; a plus to have some knowledge of modern office practices and procedures; some knowledge of record keeping systems
  • Helpful to have skill in the operation of Scales; phone; computer terminal; personal computer; copy machine; 10-key calculator; tape dispenser; hand rewinder, stretch wrapper, Tema Cutter, 42” rewinder, UPS machine
  • Ability to assemble and distribute a variety of material in an efficient manner
  • Ability to perform arithmetic computations accurately
  • Maintain routine records and communicate effectively verbally
  • Attention to detail; ability to detect product defects
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions
