Material Handler

SUMMARY

Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled work associated with loading and unloading, and moving materials within or near plant, yard, or work sites. Operates various types of hoists and powered equipment. Keeps operators supplied with raw or semi-processed materials.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Reads work order or follows written and oral instructions to ascertain materials or containers to be moved. Opens containers.
  • Loads and unloads materials onto or from pallets, trays, racks, and shelves by hand or with a hoist, forklift, or other type of lifting device.
  • Assures that proper material is at appropriate work stations in a timely manner.
  • Maintains accurate inventory, relieving inventory via computer system as required.
  • Conveys materials from storage or work sites to designated area.
  • Attaches identifying tags or labels to materials or marks information on cases or other containers.
  • Labels, stacks and assembles materials onto skids and bands material to skids.
  • Lifts heavy objects by hand or with power equipment, and cleans work area and equipment.
  • Operates industrial truck or to assist in loading or moving materials and products.
  • Cuts cores, assembles boxes, and stacks, labels, packs, and transports finished work pieces when required.
  • Brings in or takes out skids, cardboard and recycled materials.
  • Assists in shipping when needed
  • Assists with loading and unloading machines.
  • Cycle counts materials and inventory locations.

OTHER DUTIES

  • Pulls supplies (cores, tapes, etc.)
  • Assists in inventory
  • Moves material from work center to work center
  • Helps dump trash using tow motor
  • Performs back up duties for related positions
  • Serves as a member of employee committees, as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Knowledge of measuring to 1/64" with a ruler; helpful to have some knowledge of equipment, methods and procedures used in material handling work; helpful to have some knowledge of reading specification sheets; helpful to have some knowledge of pressure sensitive adhesive materials.
  • Skill in operation of cranes, hoists, power lifts, tow motor, band cutters, crowbar, claw hammer, a variety of hand and power tools used in material handling, personal computer, main frame, and printer.
  • Ability to operate a tow motor.
  • Perform arithmetic computations and measure accurately.
  • Ability to maintain good hand-eye coordination and good manual dexterity.
  • Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to detect product defects and pay close attention to detail.
  • Ability to operate personal computer, main frame, application programs, and print reports.
